will weight training make me bulky?

This is a question that a lot of female clients ask me when we start talking about their training journey.

They are worried that if they start lifting weights they will get big and bulky and they don’t want to look that way.

Put those fears to rest … you will NOT get big and bulky lifting weights.

What you will get is strong. You will develop functional muscle that looks great on you. Your body composition will change and your clothes will fit better and your posture will improve.

You see if you want to add muscle it takes a few things:

  1. You must consistently be in a calorie surplus … around 300-500 calories above your maintenance calories. This is very hard and requires a lot of discipline.

  2. You must lift heavy. Much heavier than most would like to lift just to be in shape.

  3. You must dedicate time. This can take years to develop the body you are trying to build.

So please, understand that putting on muscle, in general, will not make you look big and bulky.

It will, however, make you look strong, fit and healthy.
