What should I look for in a trainer?

Ah, the big question. What should I be looking for in a trainer. Well, here is what I would recommend.

#1 - It must be someone you gel with. They must be someone that you want to be around and you listen to and respect. For example, if you want to train, as a 50+ year old male, but you take on a trainer in their 20’s who specializes in CrossFit as their main workout, you might not be the best fit for them or them for you.

#2 - Do they have credentials? Are they certified by any companies like NASM, ACE, ISSA? Certified trainers must follow etiquette and guidelines which should be bring a more professional trainer.

#3 - Are they insured? Trainers, if training privately, must carry liability insurance.

#4 - Do they listen? Do they communicate well? And most importantly, do they understand you and your goals? A good qualified instructor will listen to you and your goals and ask clarifying questions to help refine and sharpen those goals.

#5 - Are they reliable? Do they show up on time and ready to train you? Do they have a program ready for you? Are they present when they are training you or on their phone staring at Instagram?

#6 - What is their training network like? Do they have other information (like this blog) to share info and help teach. Do they have a network of other experts to call or confer if you need additional assistance (nutrition program, physical therapy, Orthopedic doc?) All of this adds to the value of your program.
